Three Views On Original Sin Catholic Church Teaching • Catholics hold Original Sin is CONTRACTED not committed • Humans need God’s grace for the forgiveness of sins • Original Sin has wounded human nature, but has not completely corrupted it. Even with Original Sin, humans still bear the “image of God” Luther and Calvinistic Teachings on Original Sin taught that Original Sin had so radically destroyed human freedom that it was impossible for humans to overcome it. Pelagianism is the heretical belief that people, because of their natural powers of free will, can lead morally good lives without God’s help. Associated with this view is the belief that Original Sin is passed on only through example, but is not “contracted” as such. • Original Sin
Typology Romans 5:14 “But death reigned from Adam unto Moses, even over them also who have not sinned, after the similitude of the transgression of Adam, who is a figure of him who was to come.” • Original Sin

When the LORD smelled the sweet odor, the LORD said to himself: Never again will I curse the ground because of human beings, since the desires of the human heart are evil from youth; nor will I ever again strike down every living being, as I have done. Genesis 8:21 • Covenants in the Old Testament

The New Covenant, made in the Blood of Jesus, is the climax of salvation history and is God’s eternal covenant with human beings. • God prepares the world for a Savior

Servant Songs present more prophetic images of Jesus, the Suffering Servant whose sufferings redeemed all people. See, my servant shall prosper, he shall be raised high and greatly exalted. Even as many were amazed at him— so marred were his features, beyond that of mortals his appearance, beyond that of human beings— So shall he startle many nations, kings shall stand speechless; For those who have not been told shall see, those who have not heard shall ponder it. Isaiah 52:13–15 • God prepares the world for a Savior
