  5. Isaiah 11:1 – a shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse • Israel is the stump • Jesus is the shoot • We are the branches to bear fruit • Romans 11 • We need to study our Jewish roots

Jewish Feasts • God gave 7 to the Israelites • Centered around agricultural season • 3 were pilgrim festivals – must travel to Jerusalem, Passover, Feast of Weeks, Feast of Tabernacles • God was building pattern/rhythm into their lives • Show God’s faithfulness • Concrete ways to express and follow God’s commands

  8. What does God smell like? • Grilling steak!!! • Every time Jews gathered to worship God, they sacrificed bulls, rams, lambs, pigeons, and birds

Jewish Festivals • Rosh Hashanah – Feast of Trumpets • Announce coming of the king • 10 day time of reflection and repentance • Yom Kippur • Day of Atonement • Sins are taken away – scapegoat • Sukkot – Feast of Tabernacles • God “tabernacles” with us, lives with us • Ends with ceremony and prayers for rain – living water

  12. Rhythm of the Bible • Genesis 1:5 – “there was evening, and there was morning” • Biblical Rhythm – the night comes before the day • Our Monday night is actually the Biblical Tuesday night, then comes Tuesday day • Any part of a day can be considered a day

  13. Passion Week • Last Supper – Passover Seder • Christ died on Passover • 9:00 am put on the cross, time of morning national sacrifice • 3:00 pm at the time of the afternoon national sacrifice

  14. Passion Week • Christ was buried on Feast of Unleavened Bread • Leaven represents sin • Leave Egypt behind – have no sin anywhere • Exodus tells us on the first day to remove all yeast from your house • John 19:31 – “special Sabbath”

  15. Passion Week • Christ rose on the Feast of First Fruits • I Corinthians 15:20 – “But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.” • Any part of a day can be considered a day

  16. Conclusion • Jewish festivals set a pattern for Jesus’ life to fulfill • We can get a deeper meaning of Jesus’ life and death by studying our Jewish roots • Questions?
