OBE 153 Group Paper Helpful Tips for Successfully Completing Your Group Paper
Status Report • The status report is one page in length • Please include your team’s “name” • It is due this coming Tuesday 10/25/05 during class • No late status reports accepted • All members must agree to it and sign it • Remember, the final paper is due on December 6th at 1:30pm • No late papers will be accepted as well • Thank you! I’m here to help so don’t be shy.
How to Find Information • Many of you have asked: • “How do I find articles related to my questions? How should we write the paper? • First, check the textbook • Check the back of the chapters - you will see many references listed. These are a good place to start and will help you find more (by looking at the references used in those articles/book chapters, etc)
Database Suggestions • Next, hit the major databases • Lexis/Nexis for “real world” articles • ABI/Inform Global and Trade Industry (the first database on the list) • You can also speak with the reference librarians here on campus • Ask HR managers where they find this info
“Real World” References • Acceptable references include the following: • Wall Street Journal • NY Times • LA Times • SF Chronicle • Sacramento Bee • Fortune • Forbes • Business Week • Money Magazine • Fast Company
Real World References (cont) • In addition, “trade” magazines are often very helpful as well • Ex) “Workforce” magazine • Websites are riskier so be careful. When possible stick with professional associations (SHRM – Society of Human Resource Management) or ASTD (American Society for Training and Development)
Writing Style: Sample • Be as specific as you need to be to answer the questions I gave you. • Example: Leadership training • “How can organizations “best” train leaders?”
Sample Writing Style • “Through our extensive research, we found that there is no one best way to train leaders. If leadership is examined in terms of follower performance, for example, one suggestion could be the use of 360 degree feedback….. For example, in a 2003 Wall Street Journal article on employee performance, leadership and 360 degree feedback in manufacturing, employees reported that leaders who were trained in emotional intelligence had the highest level of employee performance 12 months following the training.
