  1. ANVIL HAS DEVELOPED A FIBER SOURCING STRATEGY WHICH FOCUSES ON NEGOTIATING DIRECTLY WITH FARMING GROUPS TO DEVELOP LONG-TERM, STABLE RELATIONSHIPS. INITIATIVES AN UPDATE ON OUR US DOUBLE IT! CAMPAIGN Anvil’s Campaign to double the amount of acreage dedicated to US grown organic cotton. ORGANIC IN THE AMERICAS Anvil has started to work with Jubilee House’s Center for Development in Central America (CDCA), a non-profit which started a sustainable agriculture program, including organic cotton. ANVIL SUSTAINABLE MANUFACTURING Anvil has introduced a program across its manufacturing to ensure that we are being more efficient in the manufacturing process, including in material utilization of cotton yarn.

  2. DOUBLE IT! CAMPAIGN UPDATE We continue our amazing partnership with the Texas Organic Cotton Marketing Cooperative. But, the lack of rain has severely impacted our plans to grow more acreage. According to TOCMC, estimatedacreage and bale figures for 2011 crop are down. Most of the acres that will not be harvested is non-irrigated land on which the cotton never received a rain to sprout the seed. http://www.anvilknitwearcsr.com/double-it/

ORGANIC COTTON IN THE AMERICAS Although Nicaragua used to the be the largest producer of cotton in Central America , mono-culture practices stripped the land and when cotton prices in the late 1980s plummeted, cotton production ceased in Nicaragua. Small organic farmers working with the agricultural cooperative (COPROEXNIC) of the CDCA have incorporated organic cotton into current crop rotations.  From 17 growers to over 2000 growers now. All small growers. In 2008, they installed a gin and are now working to develop some spinning capacity. Historically they have worked with smaller brands such as Maggie’s Organics. In 2011, Anvil visited the cotton farming project with the Textile Exchange’s LaRhea Pepper to assess the viability of scaling the organic cotton program. Anvil made a commitment to acquired the bulk of the cotton crop (except for certain existing customers) and will have the first crop as early as January-February of 2012.
