Journal #1 • Describe what it means to you to finally be an upperclassmen. • All entries must be in ink and a half of a page minimum. Each journal entry is worth five points. Journals are collected toward the end of the quarter. Utilize class time that is allotted for journal writing- if not, the journals will be collected spontaneously.
Journal #2 • Have you heard of the ALS Ice Bucket challenge? Have you participated? What was it like? What do you know about ALS? Do you think the challenge raises awareness for ALS? • All entries must be in ink and a half of a page minimum. Each journal entry is worth five points. Journal #3 • What are the four characteristics of a creation myth? Which one do you think is the most important? Why? Why do you think creation myths are important to a culture? What role do creation myths serve?
Journal #4 • Put the following source information into proper MLA works cited format. 1. An Internet article by Joan Ingram called “The Secrets of the Greeks.” No publishing date is provided, but it was viewed on 2/2/04 and the URL is http://www.greeksecrets.com. 2. An Internet article with no author called “Famous Greek Battles.” It was published on June 14, 1999, viewed on January 12, 2004, and the URL is http://www.iahistory.org/greeks/battles.htm. 3. A book by Henry Goldman and Elizabeth Howard called Ancient Civilizations. It was published in Philadelphia by Gold House in 1989.
Journal #5 • What makes a good storyteller? What are the purpose of stories? What is your favorite story you have read or heard? Why do you like it?
Journal #6 • Staple your AoW questions on top of your article. • Irritation, rage, and wrath. What words do you also associate with these feelings? Do all three of these words have the same degree of emotion behind them? What word has the strongest emotion/meaning behind it? What word has the weakest emotion/meaning behind it? Write a sentence for each word that shows how these words differ.
Journal #7 • What has been the most impressive/impactful speech you have ever heard? This could be from a coach or from a sermon or even your parents. What was the point of the speech? Why was it so impactful? What words did the speaker use to make the speech so memorable? If you cannot think of a memorable speech, write a memorable speech about the importance of doing/not doing your homework.
Journal #8 • Please staple your AoW. Questions on top, article on the bottom. Place on front desk. • Imagine you were a child in the town of Salem (where The Crucible takes place). What would your life be like? What would you do for entertainment? What would you like/dislike the most? How might you possibly rebel or express dissatisfaction with your place in life?
Journal #9 • Who is your favorite character so far in The Crucible? Why? Do you think by the end of the play, Abigail will get what she wants (John Proctor)? Why or why not? What do you think is going to happen in Salem during this crucible?
Journal #10 • Staple your AoW questions on top of the article. Then place it on the table. • QUESTIONS ON TOP OF ARTICLE • What are your thoughts about the first mid-quarter of school? What have you achieved so far? What can you do to have a better second half? What are you looking forward to in rest of September?
Journal #11 • Look at your Cornell Notes from Friday. How do you read The Crucible critically? How does the text help us have a fuller understanding of lives other than our own? How does the text help you be more empathetic? How does the text help you avoid getting dumped?
Journal #12 • Staple AoW questions on top and place in front. • What speech have you picked for your Great American Speech project? What is the scariest part of the project? Why? What part do you feel the most confident with? Why? How will you make sure that you meet all the due dates? • By end of today, you need to have your speech and one source. • By tomorrow, you need to have your speech and three sources.
