Overview • Feb. 3, 2009 -- Governor asks the Lieutenant Governor to lead the effort to modernize state government • Four Goals: • A Government Focused on Core Priorities • Enhancing Service to Citizens • Maximizing Technology • Attracting the Next Generation of Talent
Why streamline government now? • We have a state government designed in the 1950’s • Since then, massive changes in the economy • Massive changes in how we live, work and communicate
What this initiative is… • We are asking the people of Michigan what they think the role of state government should be • We will be as transparent as possible, with full public participation • We will include the broadest possible cross-section of citizens, business, labor and academic leaders
What this initiative is… • We will identify the core functions of 21st century state government and make sure all state employees are focused on them • We will remain committed to job creation, education, and protecting Michigan citizens
Timeline of this project • Town halls and public input through mid-August • Updates posted to michigan.gov/ltgov • Project conclusion: early 2010
Tonight’s program • Over the last few months we have identified 7 core functions of state government • Tonight we are asking you whether those functions should be included in state government
Tonight’s program • I will read descriptions of the 7 core functions (raise your hand if you don’t have a copy) • Using your electronic clickers, you will be asked to vote yes or no on including those functions • Results will appear immediately onscreen
Tonight’s program • After you have voted on all 7 functions we will review the results and ask for your participation in discussing them • We will also ask you for suggestions and input about other functions and subjects that may not be included in the 7 core functions
Tonight’s program • We need input from as many as possible • Please keep your comments brief
