Reading Instruction Whole Group ~On Grade Level Text ~Reading Skills (main idea, sequencing, etc.) ~Mixed-ability grouping Small Group ~Similar-ability grouping ~Leveled text selected by teacher ~Reading for fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary Individualized ~Accelerated Reader
Students will pick a book according to their level. Books may be read at school and at home. When students have read the text a minimum of three times*, they will be able to take the AR test at school. *excludes chapter books Once a student has taken a test, he or she will go to the library and check out another book independently. Standards Based Reporting The purpose of assessment is to improve learning and to guide instruction. Grading should be consistent, fair and meaningful. Communication regarding student achievement should be based on a body of evidence. Grades should reflect what a child knows and can produce.
Homework Weekly homework will be sent home on Mondays. Homework will include both hands-on and paper-pencil activities. See weekly newsletter for details. Due Fridays
The "Nitty Gritty" Communication Binders will travel home and back to school DAILY. AR books and tests are recorded by the students in an AR folder. These folders will travel home and be returned after the student has read the AR book three times and a parent signs off that the student is ready to take the AR test. It is the student's responsibility to inform the teacher they are ready for a test. Weekly newsletters will include important dates and information. Please read carefully. Homework should be produced by the child and checked by the parent. It is a review of skills presented in the classroom. If your child is struggling, please let us know. Communication should be addressed to the student's teacher through email OR the Communication Binder. ALL transportation changes need to be in writing before 1:45.
