It starts out full when we are born, but whenever we develop negative beliefs, it is like poking holes in our bucket and our self esteem drips out.”

  4. HIGH VS. LOW SELF ESTEEM HIGH Positive feelings about oneself * Willing to try new things * Resist peer pressure * Confident * Accept consequences for their actions * Outgoing LOW Negative feelings about oneself *Putting yourself down * Scared to try new things * Quiet/Reserved * More difficult to build relationships * Blame others for your failures

  5. HOW TO OVERCOME LOW SELF ESTEEM • Use affirmation statements (Positive statements about yourself.) • Don’t accept “friendly” putdowns. • Create realistic short and long term goals. • Eliminate negative thoughts and the word, “Can’t.”

  6. SELF ESTEEM ACTIVITY Each student will be given an index card with a statement written on it. You must decide whether the statement is portraying an example of high self esteem or an example of low self esteem. Each student will read their statement out loud and explain to the class their choice.
