Small Scale Internal Combustion Engine Test Bed TEAM 2: JoSETH MORENO Karina Santa Leslie Paredes Department of Mechanical Engineering Florida International University Miami, Florida Faculty Advisor: Dr. Andres Tremante
PROJECT OBJECTIVE • Design a test bed to measure engine performance of alternate sources of fuel. • Determine the most efficient fuel mixture for model engines to be used in UAV’s. • Samples of fuels to be used: • Gasoline, Biodiesel, Ethanol. • Test bed will be developed around an existing dynamometer. Moreno, Paredes, Santa
PROJECT MOTIVATION Ethanol is a renewable source of fuel; it can be re-grown. Bio-fuels have not being tested considerably in small scale internal combustion engines. Less expensive fuel could be used for UAV’s. Moreno, Paredes, Santa
METRICS DYNAMOMETER • Max Speed: 8, 000 rpm • Power: between 1-3 BHP • Height: 6.58 in • Length: 20 in (overall) • Width: 10 in • ENGINE • 2 or 4 stroke engine • with Glow Ignition. • Power: between 1-3 BHP • Max speed: 25, 000 rpm • Weight: approximately 32 oz Moreno, Paredes, Santa
CONCEPTUAL DESIGN COMPONENTS • Mounting plate • Final mounting plate design is dependant upon selected engine geometry. • Specification: 10” x 6“ • Slider Mechanism • Creates horizontal movement between the mounting plate and the dynamometer. Moreno, Paredes, Santa
TEST BED CONCEPTUAL DESIGN Conceptual Design I Conceptual Design II Final Conceptual Design Moreno, Paredes, Santa
SIMULATION ANALYSIS • Software to be used: Solidworks and ANSYS • Analysis to be done on the engine and manufactured components: • Structural Analysis • Thermal Analysis Moreno, Paredes, Santa
PROJECT DESIGN STRUCTURE Check dynamometer parameters: RPM limits, specifications and calibration of measurement sensors. Select appropriate small scale engine to meet design requirements. Design necessary components to accommodate engine adaptation onto the dynamometer. Test fuel mixtures. Run engines on dynamometer. Moreno, Paredes, Santa

CONCLUSION A test bed will be designed to measure engine performance of alternate sources of fuel. Different performances will be measured for various small scale engines. Efficient fuel mixture will be selected for model engines that could be implemented in UAV’s. Future internal combustion engine lab will be available for FIU’s Mechanical Engineering Department.
