  2. Simile • Simile- Using like or as to compare two things • At work my mother is busy as a bee.

  3. Metaphor • Metaphor- Comparing two things without using like or as; something is something else. • The thunder is an erupting volcano.

  4. Hyperbole • Hyperbole- Using exaggeration to make a point. • I’m so hungry I could eat an entire horse! • I have a ton of homework!

  5. Onomatopoeia • Onomatopoeia- Sound word • I heard the buzz buzz of a bee. • The ice went clink in the glass as I lifted it.

  6. Alliteration • Alliteration- Repetition of a beginning sound. • The dog named Duke dug a ditch.

  7. Personification • Personification- Giving human qualities to something that is not human. • The beautiful flowers shook their heads as we walked by. • The sun smiled down at us while we hiked.

  8. Idiom • Idiom- A well known expression that does not mean what it says. • She had a chip on her shoulder because of her friend problems. • This test will be a piece of cake!

  9. Practice Problems • Her room is as messy as a barn. • The tree branches waved goodbye as I drove away. • Bark went the dog as the mailman walked by. • He ran faster than the wind! 5. Harold hissed through his teeth. • I would come over but I’m busy as a bee! • Her room is a pig sty!
