How England Treated the Colonies. • England uses the colonies for raw materials. • Tobacco, Cotton, etc. • Allowing the colonies to govern themselves w/out much interference- salutary neglect. • Produced cigars and clothing from raw materials and used profits to benefit the mother country. Getting Worse! • Townsend Acts or Duties • Levied taxes on goods imported to colonies. • Glass, tea, paper and lead. • Led to a boycott of the Stamp Act. • Boston Massacre- protesting tax and harassing collectors. Brits shot and killed 5! • Tea Act- Parliament lowers tax on British tea crippling other tea companies. • Boston Tea Party- dumping of tea into Boston Harbor

Colonist Organize • Albany Plan of Union- attempt to organize colonies. • Sons of Liberty-shopkeepers led rebellion against Stamp Act • 1st Continental Congress • Philly, PA- delegates meet to send George III a letter demanding rights be restored and boycott goods. • “No taxation w/out representation.” • Battle of Lexington and Concord- shot heard round the world. • 1st shots fired. • 2nd Congress- “should we declare independence?” • formed a confederation to fight
