  3. Background • CoP-D1 Project - Suite of Resources • WADTSC’s NPA – ‘End of Life’ • Knowledge Translation Activity Training to care for people with dementia

Aims of the project • Develop a train the trainer package • Pilot with 5 organisations in WA – evaluate • Based on evaluation, modify and improve: deliver a second pilot in WA • Invite other DTSCs to do a pilot – SA doing • Final outcome – training package on DTSC website – stand alone Training to care for people with dementia

  5. Why? ‘Chang et al (2009) have long advocated the need for staff to have superior skills in assessment, pain and symptom management and negotiation of care with family’ Chang and Johnston Training to care for people with dementia

  6. A Palliative Approach ‘One thing that is known is that dementia is a progressive disease that cannot be cured…people with dementia will have a shortened life span because of their disease’ E. Chang, 2007 Training to care for people with dementia

Participation Criteria Organisations that provide residential aged care: • for people with dementia who are at end stage of life • who recognise a need for improvement in practices related to end-of-life dementia care • who could commit to a12 week program Training to care for people with dementia

  9. Pilot Two: The 2 Organisations • Maurice Zeffert Home • Juniper (UCH) - Ella Williams facility Training to care for people with dementia

  10. Engagement • Each organisation nominated 2 key people to participate in the program • The 2 key people needed to have the capability, desire, strength and knowledge to lead and implement change Training to care for people with dementia
