No QOTD 9/26/14 You have 5 minutes to study for the quiz.
Quiz time! • You have about 10-15 minutes for the quiz. • When you are finished with the quiz, pick up today’s assignment: Percent Error Calculations. • Make the necessary measurements in the back of the room. I will give you MY measurements later. • When everyone is done, we will take a few short notes on the Percent Error Calculations sheet.
Learning Target • Understand what percent error measures and how it applies to your measurements in the lab. • Be able to calculate percent error
Notes • % error definition: a measure of how inaccurate a measurement is, compared to how large the measurement is. • A measurement that is off by 5 g might be a HUGE error if the true answer was supposed to be 10 g (you would have a 50% error) but the same error of 5 g would be insignificant if the true answer was supposed to be 10 kg. Then you would have only a 0.1% error (meaning 5 g is insignificant when compared to 5 kg)
notes • Formula: Experimental - Theoretical X 100 • Theoretical • Experimental = Values obtained from YOUR measurements • Theoretical = Values obtained from some authority -> book, table, Mr. C, etc. • (+) A positive percent error indicates your experimental values are greater than the theoretical values. • (-) A negative percent error indicates your experimental values are less than the theoretical values.
Sample calculation • Experimental Value: 1.24 g • Theoretical Value: 1.30 g % error = 1.24 g - 1.30 g x 100 = 1.30 g now try calculating it yourself….. - 4.6%
Homework • Finish the measurements • When you have the measurements, come see me for the “theoretical” answers I measured. • Calculate the percent error for each measurement. • Answer the HW problems on the last page
