  3. Introduction • JNCC has a statutory responsibility for the identification of SACs and SPAs in UK offshore waters (12-200nm). • Also advise on their subsequent protection and management.

  4. EC Habitats DirectiveAnnex I habitat types • Three habitat types found in UK offshore waters requiring protection according to Annex I of the Habitats Directive; • Reefs (of which there are three sub-types); • Bedrock • Stony • Biogenic • Sandbanks which are slightly covered by seawater all the time; • Submarine structures made by leaking gases (e.g. MDAC structures)

  5. Data sufficiency requirements • Need to confirm that the area hosts the Annex I habitat and enables the identification of the specific sub-type; • Enable evaluation against the Annex III selection criteria (including to identify the extent of the habitat); • Provide a picture of the biological community present on the Annex I feature.

  11. Data availability • Majority of surveys are government funded. • data freely available. • will be lodged with appropriate Data Archive Centres. • Data generated through collaborative projects are made available where permissions allow
