Foundation for Environmental Education • Non-profit, non-governmental organisation • Aims to promote sustainable development through environmental education • Umbrella organisation with normally one member organisation in each country • 4 member organisations in 4 countries in 1981 • 72 member organisations in 63 countries in 2011 • Runs five environmental education programmes
History of FEE • FEEE (Foundation for Environmental Education in Europe): established in 1981 • Blue Flag: adopted with the support of the European Commission in 1987 • In 1994 the Eco-Schools and YRE programmes were added • LEAF was implemented as a FEE programme in 2000 and Green Key in 2003 • In 2001 FEEE became international and changed name to FEE

Eco-Schools • An action orientated 7-step ‘change’ process. • Managed through student-led Eco-School committees • Embedded in student learning • Through themes such as Energy, Water, Waste, and Climate Change • Using real life situations; • Resulting in: • Eco-certification for a Green Flag • Development of leadership capacity • Lowering environmental footprints • Life long learning for a sustainable world

Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE) • Network of secondary school teachers and student • 3 objectives: • Local inquiry problem and solution oriented • Journalistic production • Communication to a local audience
Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE) • International cooperation with other students to create joint articles • Best articles collected into an international book • Awards are given for best articles and photos • Around 500 projects in 2008-2009
Learning about Forests (LEAF) • Encourages teachers to use the forest for educational activities • Encourages learning about forests, from forests, in forests • International network between participating countries • Teaching materials are shared across borders

Blue Flag • Running in 41 countries in 2010 • More than 3600 sites are awarded in 2010 • Application approved by National and International Jury • Individual Blue Flag for Boat owners at marinas
Green Key • Eco-label for tourism facilities • Hotels • Campsites • Hostels • Conference centres • A voluntary award given one year at a time • Standard international criteria and specialized national criteria • >1300 sites awarded by end 2010
