  2. Lithosphere • The lithosphere includes the upper layer of the mantle and the crust. • The lithosphere provides us with the solid ground on which we live. Plate Tectonics The plates make up the Earth The Plate Tectonics are also called lithospheric plate. Plate Tectonics can be from hundred to thousands of kilometers across Continental Drift The Continental drift is when continents drift apart by the edges of plates.

  3. Volcanism • Volcanism is when materials from the core of the earth erupt out to the surface.

Biosphere • The biosphere is where all the animals, trees, and bugs live. • Any place where living things live is called the biosphere. • The biosphere is also called the “life zone” of the earth. • The biosphere reaches from the bottom of the ocean to the highest part of the atmosphere that contains life. • The biosphere contains habitats and the living things within them.

  5. Hydrosphere • The hydrosphere includes all of the earth’s water that is found in glaciers, oceans, streams, lakes, the soil, ground and air. • The hydrosphere can also be called the “water sphere.” • Water from the hydrosphere covers 75% of the earth.

  6. Hydrosphere Water Cycle • The water cycle begins in lakes, streams, or oceans. • Water from the lakes, streams, or oceans evaporates and forms clouds. • The water comes back down as rain or snow, and goes into lakes, streams, or oceans again. • The water cycle never stops.

  7. Atmosphere • The Atmosphere is made up of oxygen, nitrogen, and other gases. • Birds and Insects can be found in the Atmosphere • The function of the Atmosphere is to trap heat from the sun, and to shield the planet from dangerous radiation. • The layers of the atmosphere are the troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, and ionosphere.

  8. Atmosphere • The atmosphere is the layer of gases that surrounds the earth.

  9. How the Spheres Interact • The hydrosphere interacts with all of the other spheres, by providing water for all living things. • The atmosphere interacts with the other spheres by providing oxygen for living things. • The lithosphere interacts with all of the other spheres by providing the land to live on. • The biosphere contains all of the above. It interacts with all of the other spheres, because everything that people and animals do affects the land, water and air.
