Rethinking Education • 21st Century learning requires students to: • Think critically • Use all forms of information effectively • Changes are increasing demand for: • Knowledgeable, critical and creative thinkers • Proficiency across core learning areas such as science, technology and culture • There is a shift from traditional to student-centered approaches • The role of the teacher or professor is to create more active and self-directed learning
Key Questions • What does e-Learning mean for education in the 21st Century? • Why is it important to make a shift to 21st Century learning? • How can we use e-Learning to improve student engagement and achievement? • What teaching approaches and methodologies will promote 21st Century learning?
Traditional Lecture Method Students learn material by studying on their own and attending lectures about the history of the Arab World 21st Century Learning Students undertake inquiry projects into history questions through engaging in discussion and collaboration with others. What does e-Learning mean for education in the 21st Century? • In 21st Century Learning, students not only learn the content but they take responsibility for their own learning process by: • Locating and processing information in various forms • Working with others to create their own understandings • Becoming capable communicators and teachers • Becoming a valued member of a learning community
Creating Student-Centered Learning Environments • E-Learning offers new ways of providing interactive, authentic, and meaningful learning experiences • E-Learning is for ALL students whether studying face-to-face, online, part-time, or full-time • New technologies provide many opportunities for actively engaging and motivating students to achieve
Linking Advanced Technologies to Advanced Teaching Methods • Simply putting courses online does not work! • Effective forms of e-learning use e-learning combined with traditional forms of instruction such as face-to-face meetings and on campus seminars. • Combined learning methods are referred to as “blended learning”
Blended Learning Example Attends class on campus Reads texts and participates in online project Group presentation online or in class Completes e-learning study and collaborative project or online exam
Why is it important to make the shift to 21st Century learning? Students in today’s global world need to possess not only academic skills, but also a range of intellectual, social, cultural, and life skills needed to excel in education and the workplace

The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) Involved more than 1200 different colleges and universities, NSSE measured five benchmarks of active learning and student engagement: Active and Collaborative Learning Level of Academic Challenge Student-Faculty Interaction Enriching Educational Experiences Supportive Campus Environment How can we use e-learning to improve engagement and achievement?
Psychological Benefits of Active Learning and Student Engagement Results of NSSE showed that students who are actively engaged in learning: • Feel that they belong in a school or university community • Are motivated to study • Form peer friendships and peer networks • Persist with school and university study (Krause, 2008)
E-Learning As a Context to Promote Student Engagement E-Learning provides teachers and professors several tools to create an effective learning community.
What teaching approaches and methodologies will promote 21st Century Learning? New web 2.0 collaborative learning technologies provide an exciting new way to create learning communities for students and professional at all levels
Teaching Thinking Skills and Learning Strategies Thinking Skills and Learning Strategies need to be directly taught.
Active Learning • Active learning is a teaching method that actively involves student in the learning process. • It involves a variety of activities to get the brain working. • This is done by involving students in learning events that allow them to “hear”, “see”, “question”, “discuss”, “use and teach the content” • Active Learning is relevant for e-Learning, blended learning and traditional face-to-face approaches. (Silberman, 1996)
Main Points • Effective e-Learning needs to be based on effective teaching and learning practices that are supported by research evidence • E-Learning is important as a vehicle for transforming teaching institutions into student-centered learning organizations. • Student-centered learning organizations should focus on enhancing student engagement and achievement. • E-Learning is not just about technology but about the opportunities it provides to improve teaching and learning processes and outcomes. • Success depends upon professional development for teachers and professors to change to student-centered active learning for the 21st century.
Conclusion • The challenge is to integrate appropriate learning technologies in ways that enhance student engagement and achievement • Teachers and educators need to receive professional development that will equip them to become knowledge management specialists who know how to use e-learning to create effective learning environments for all students
