Introduction “People always fear change. People feared electricity when it was invented, didn’t they? People feared coal, they feared gas-powered engines. There will always be ignorance, and ignorance leads to fear. But with time, people will come to accept their silicon masters.” My career is a computer programmer. I got interested in this career field when I was in elementary school. I used to have a job where I would go around working on computers in the school and I would get free candy in return. I will be researching salary, the job outlook, and the type of degree I need.
Nature of Work High pay. Work with computer language. Update programs. Learn many different codes. Write codes for long periods of time. Work alone.
Working Conditions This career field involves lots of mental thinking. This career field usually has you in a indoor area in front of a computer typing in computer codes. This is a full time job. Most of the time you are in an office writing codes for long periods of time.
Training, Qualifications, Advancement Most employers require that you have a Bachelors degree. However, some people employ workers with an Associates. To acquire this job I am planning to go to University of Michigan or Michigan State University, both offering a PhD. To prepare me I will take programming for Xbox 360 In high school.
Job Outlook and Employment The employment rate is going up 12% from 2010 to 2020. The employment change is 43,700. I would like to find my job around the Michigan area. In the future I would like to work for Microsoft or Valve.
Earnings My lifestyle goals are to live in a 4 bedroom house by a lake. A Corvette ZR1 parked in my garage and have a trampoline. The average earnings for a computer programmer is about $71,380 a year. Making about $34.32 an hour. To fit my lifestyle I think this will be a decent job. If I save less than half of my paychecks then I think I will be able to buy a house near the water. Saving will help me stay out of debt so I can achieve my goals faster. My first purchase with my money will probably be a trampoline because trampolines can relieve a lot of stress from school!
Related Occupation One backup job I have in mind is a computer engineer. Some responsibilities are that I must work with micro chips, loads of data, be creative and develop new pieces of equipment. To achieve this job I need to obtain an Bachelors degree in computer engineering. I chose this job as a secondary because I enjoy doing things with computers. When I was little I always wanted to build computers and things of that nature so being a computer engineer is one of my dream jobs. This career is expected to increase only about 9% in the next 10 years. But engineers are expected to increase 14%
Summary I could go on and on about how much I would like to be in a career field that involves using computers. I like to use computers. I like to make things with computers. Being a part of developing technology is a great thing to me. With my job as a software engineer I can achieve my lifestyle goals in no time. It will provide a secure job because technology is rapidly changing and you are going to need plenty of people to keep up on the change.
