One Health Workshop Swine Health Rapid Response Partnership May 5, 2009
Thanks to… The Global One Health Leadership Fund for its support of this project
Proposal Focus • Ecosystem Health: meeting the challenges at the intersection of human and animal health and the environment. • Emerging issues involving commercial swine production including, but not limited to, potential zoonoses, occupational health, and environmental health
Proposal Goals • Identify and conduct interviews of veterinary advisors who helped created current downtime recommendations. • Compile downtime recommendations used within the swine industry and by other food animal entities (poultry and beef). • Complete and publish a thorough review of the published literature which addresses the transmission of swine pathogens by people. • Recommend new downtimes for consideration by AASV and NPB. • Present findings to other swine genetics companies for their consideration and critique • Propose future research projects which address transfer of specific pathogens by people.
Proposal Justification • Current downtime recommendations are onerous for swine practitioners and detrimental to the provision of rapid response to sick pigs. Thus, zoonotic agents may not be responded to immediately. • Evidence-based downtime and sanitation practices between farms will expedite veterinary services for swine and public health concerns.
What were the outcomes? • Interviews indicated no evidence-based reasons for current down-time recommendations. • Literature search completed • Transmission of PRRSv, Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, and swine influenza • Final draft is pending
Unexpected opportunities or challenges? • Recent H1N1 infections • Rapid response needed • How do we protect people? • How do we protect pigs? • How fast can a herd veterinarian get into a farm to do diagnostic work?
What are the next steps? • Draft proposal for consideration by: • American Association of Swine Veterinarians • National Pork Board • Outcome: • Acceptance of shorter personnel downtimes for executives and veterinarians of production and genetics companies
