  5. Compound Sentence Review A compound sentence is made up of two independent clauses, or complete sentences. The clauses are joined by a comma and a conjunction. Use the conjunction and to join two ideas that are alike. Use the conjunction or to show a choice between two ideas. Use the conjunction but or yet to join two different ideas.

  6. “and”two ideas that are alike together • Lisa ran up the stairs. She made a telephone call. • Compound sentence: • Lisa ran up the stairs and she made a telephone call.

  7. “or”a choice between two ideas. • The wind has to stop. The airplanes will not be able to leave. • Compound sentence: • The wind has to stop or the airplanes will not be able to leave.

  8. “but” or “yet”a difference between two ideas • I like to watch hockey on television. I am always busy Saturday night. • Compound sentence: • I like to watch hockey on television but I am always busy Saturday night. • Class is fun. It still could be better. • Compound sentence: • Class is fun yet it still could be better.

  9. Practice 1. My mother hates exercising. My father loves it. Compound sentence: 2. Leave the dog alone. He will bite you. Compound sentence: My mother hates exercising yet my father loves it. Leave the dog alone or he will bite you.

  10. Practice 3. The band played loudly. The audience enjoyed it. Compound sentence: 4. I reserved four tickets. That wasn’t enough! Compound sentence: The band played loudly and the audience enjoyed it. I reserved four tickets but that wasn’t enough!

  11. Other Conjunctions For tells why. I do not like fillings, for they make my mouth numb. __________________________________ Nor means “not either”. Mom does not have any fillings, nor does my sister. __________________________________

  12. Careful! • These are NOT Compound Sentences • I like pizza and hamburgers. • We can go to the movies or stay in. • But he never has to go to bed before me! • Why? • Who can turn them into compound sentences?

  16. Talking Walls The pictures and words used in Diego Rivera’s murals, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and Pablo Neruda’s gate communicate important messages and help to preserve history.

  18. History • Story of a country and its people. • The Civil War is part of the history of the United States.

  19. Legacy • Thing or idea handed down from the past. • The statue was built to help young people remember the legacy of their ancestors.

  20. Memento • Reminder of the past, souvenir. • He kept the rock as a memento of his trip to the beach.

  21. Memorial • Something that keeps alive the memory of a person or event. • The memorial was built to honor soldiers who died fighting in the war.

  22. Monument • Something built to last a long time that honors a person or event. • The Washington Monument is one of the most famous landmarks in Washington, D.C.

  23. Mural • Large picture painted on a wall or other surface. • The mural showed the lives of people living in small towns in Mexico.

  24. Portray • To make a picture of. • The mural portrayed how the country was changing.

  25. Represent • Be an example or model of something. • The wars fought in the past represent the country’s belief in freedom.

  26. Tribute • Something given to show thanks or respect. • The city planned a tribute to honor the firemen who died.

Directions • Get into groups of 3 and number off. • Separate into number alike groups. • Each person writes two strong sentences on your own paper about the wall trying to include key vocabulary and an opinion. • Check your sentences with your group. • Copy your sentences onto a sentence strip. • Back in your groups, practice making compound sentences with other people. • Choose one other wall to compare to your own to and complete the Venn diagram with phrases to help with the LAA.
