6.1 Adolescence In Our Society
Two Worlds • Adolescence – somewhere between puberty and the beginning of adulthood • Known in some circles as purgatory • Puberty – physical maturing that makes an individual capable of reproducing • Only puberty occurs in every society
Concept of Adolescence • Puberty Rites – entrance from young people to adulthood • Take these “tests” around 13-14 in some societies • Adolescence has evolved in the last 50 years • Three factors in development of the importance of this stage: • Education – financial dependency / putting off adulthood • Exclusion from labor force – part time jobs • Juvenile justice system – separate legal status / system
5 Characteristics • Biological Growth and Development • Undefined Status • Increased Decision Making • Increased Pressure • The Search for Self
Biological Growth and Development • Biological development is controlled by the brain / endocrine system • Developing bodies may cause anxiety • Happens to everyone on earth
Undefined Status • How adults treat adolescents • Adopt some of their ideas, reject many of their ideas • Treat them like children, treat them like adults
Increased Decision Making • Having to make big and small decisions • Transition from having adults make choices to the adolescent making the majority of the choices • Long and short term effects
Increased Pressure • Must strike a balance between parental wishes and peer pressure • Pressure to be part of the “in group”
Search for Self • Anticipatory Socialization • Graduation from playing house to having a part time job, dating, club memberships
