PiLDo Labs: Experience and Role • Wide experience in the GNSS aviation domain: • Technical support to Certification of new GNSS service provision in the aviation domain: EGNOS, GBAS, in the future Galileo and multi-constellation • Support the introduction of GNSS services in aviation: • Aircraft (GIANT, GIANT-2, GBAS trials) • Rotorcraft (HEDGE) • Promotion of GNSS European systems in the Latin America region • ATM Solutions and applications: RNAV procedure design and support tools • Role in METIS Wide Area Demonstrations (Aviation): • Equip Technosky’s aircraft with a GNSS navigation platform • LPV Procedure Design for Çanakkale airport • Support Telespazio for the demonstrations plan definition • Perform database coordination • Support ANSP’s for the installation of ground static receivers METIS Workshop Benefits of EGNOS in Civil Aviation, Istanbul 18 November 2009
Design of LPV in Çanakkale (I) • Process divided in several phases: • EGNOS performances in the region (use of MEDACON Data) • Revision of Çanakkale AIP data information • Coordinated design with DHMI team • Chart generation METIS Workshop Benefits of EGNOS in Civil Aviation, Istanbul 18 November 2009
Design of LPV in Çanakkale (I) - MEDaCoN (I) MEDACoN: another METIS demo composed by a network of data collection stations in the MEDA Area providing information about the status and the performances of EGNOS over the region • Çanakkale airport • TurkSAT station in Edirne • Technion station in Haifa • ARIJ station in Bethlehem Source: MEDACoN • Elgazala station in Ariana • Pildo Labs station in Barcelona • Alakhawayn station in Ifrane METIS Workshop Benefits of EGNOS in Civil Aviation, Istanbul 18 November 2009

Design of LPV in Çanakkale (VI) CURRENT PUBLISHED NPA (VOR) PROCEDURE PROPOSED LPV APPROACH PROCEDURE • Compared to current NPA published procedures in Çanakkale, LPV offers: • Vertical guidance allowing continuous descent profile • Benefits in terms of engine noise and pollution • Reduction in the operational minima of more than 900 ft (~270 metres) • Independence from ground navaids Çanakkale VOR procedure (source: DHMI) Çanakkale LPV procedure (source: Pildo Labs)
Database coding process • LPV procedure is defined by a Final Approach Segment Data Block (FAS DB) with a Channel Number identifier: • The FAS DB is a set of parameters to identify a single LPV during the coding and define its associated approach path (including a CRC reminder) • The Channel Number consists on 5 numeric characters in the range 40000 to 99999 to identify an individual approach during operation • This data is provided to database coders (Jeppesen) to insert it in their systems • Receiver manufacturers (Garmin) • build the receiver’s database METIS Workshop Benefits of EGNOS in Civil Aviation, Istanbul 18 November 2009
GNSS receivers and platform operation (I) • Garmin GNS480: certified avionics receiver computing deviations for pilots • Septentrio PolaRx2: lab receiver for system monitoring METIS Workshop Benefits of EGNOS in Civil Aviation, Istanbul 18 November 2009
GNSS receivers and platform operation (II) • Deviations computed by the GNS480 – horizontal only • Presented to the pilot thanks to a CDI/VDI (Course Deviation Indicator/Vertical Deviation Indicator) OPERATION DURING INITIAL APPROACH (IAF to IF) GNS 480 CDI/VDI Glide Slope Flag OFF GNS 480 in TERMINAL mode METIS Workshop Benefits of EGNOS in Civil Aviation, Istanbul 18 November 2009
GNSS receivers and platform operation (III) • Deviations computed by the GNS480 – horizontal & vertical • Presented to the pilot thanks to a CDI/VDI (Course Deviation Indicator/Vertical Deviation Indicator) OPERATION IN LPV MODE (IF/FAF toDestination) GNS 480 CDI/VDI GNS 480 in APPROACH mode Glide Slope flag ON LPV annunciator METIS Workshop Benefits of EGNOS in Civil Aviation, Istanbul 18 November 2009
Results and Lessons Learnt from the trials at Çanakkale (I) • Heritages from previous EU projects (Valencia, San Sebastian, Nice, Sion, Clermont-Ferrand...) re-used and adapted for this location • 1st day: 5th November 2009 • Intermittent LPV (APV 1) service in the area (edge of EGNOS coverage) • All attempts ending with an ‘Abort Approach’ message in the receiver’s display • 2nd day: 6th November 2009 • Nice performance of EGNOS SIS • 5 approaches flown successfully METIS Workshop Benefits of EGNOS in Civil Aviation, Istanbul 18 November 2009
Results and Lessons Learnt from the trials at Çanakkale (II) • 1st day: 5th November 2009 • Intermittent LPV (APV 1) service in the area • All attempts ending with an ‘Abort Approach’ message in the receiver’s display LATITUDE Example: 1st Approach HPL > HAL = 40m Approaches aborted, not downgraded, due to the lack of LNAV minima in the chart LONGITUDE METIS Workshop Benefits of EGNOS in Civil Aviation, Istanbul 18 November 2009
Results and Lessons Learnt from the trials at Peruggia (I) • Heritages from previous EU projects (Valencia, San Sebastian, Nice, Sion, Clermont-Ferrand...) re-used and adapted for this location • 11th November 2009 • Nice performance of EGNOS SIS • 5 approaches flown successfully LIRZ METIS Workshop Benefits of EGNOS in Civil Aviation, Istanbul 18 November 2009
