Membership • Membership in all 50 states • 15 international members due to cross marketing our Journal to international subscribers • Tremendous growth since 2009 due to large group memberships (from 1,379 members to 13,000+ members) • MPAEA was first BIG large group member in 2009; there are now 27 large group members
Board Compilation • COABE Board was convened in 1972 • Jackie Taylor is the 35th president • 18 of the 35 presidents have held doctorates • 19 were employed by public schools /community colleges, 12 by universities, 2 by state departments of education, 1 in correctional education, 1 as a paraprofessional
Strategic Planning • 3 strategic plans have been developed over the last 10 years. • The first strategic plan resulted in a flyer that was widely disseminated • The second strategic plan resulted in COABE purchasing it’s first online database • The third strategic plan is still in process
Journal • Co published by COABE since 1977 • Three publishers over 10 years • Piedmont University • ProLiteracy • Western Kentucky University • Largest subscription base in its history in 2013
Advocacy • COABE’s Contact Network was started in 2011 and has representation in 27 states.
Awards, Incentive Grants, Scholarships • Over $250,000* given back to the field in the form of awards, incentive grants, and scholarships over the last 10 years. *This figure includes travel stipends and conference registrations as well as financial awards.
Communication • COABE’s first Membership Update was published on July 1, 2012 • 3 blogs in 2012-2013 (Journal, Portal, Elections) • Our info@coabe.org inbox receives over 3,000 emails annually • The website receives over 8,000 thousand unique visitors per month

Regional Institutes • 12 Regional Institutes have been held over the last 7 years. • Training is targeted to the region’s needs. • Funding from COABE supports national level presenters and keynote speakers. • Institutes help build membership and state partnerships
Technology • Joined: • Facebook (2011)– 426 likes • Twitter (2012) – 542 followers • LinkedIn (February 2013) – 831 members • Pinterest (June 2013)
Nominations & Elections THEN • Hard copy nominations and elections process until 2008 • Back then roughly 100 votes would be cast • Difficulty getting candidates to run for office due to lack of interest
Nominations & Elections NOW • Electronic voting • 31 candidates submitted applications for consideration in 2013 • 5 write-in candidates campaigned for office • Nearly 700 ballots were cast • Candidate’s bio and platform published on blog and website
Charitable Giving • COABE has donated to a few charities over the last 10 years: • LACNY after 9/11 • Mississippi and Louisiana programs after Hurricane Katrina • Beyond Borders after hurricane in Haiti • Glide Memorial Church (homeless initiative) • Center for Global Justice • LA Dream Center
Conference • The COABE conference has been held in 22 states over the last 30 years, including the state of Alaska • 19 of the conferences made less than $10,000 • 2012 conference was one of the smallest in recent history, but enjoyed the biggest profit recorded
