  4. Client – Server Model • New web design allows for a true client – server environment • One server can service many clients • Accessible from any networked campus computer • No OS requirement, as HTML is platform independent

  5. Web server design • Central program logic / maintenance location • Will use HTML and a web scripting language for GUI interface • Map interface will use a Java applet • Easier to maintain than QT

  6. Mapping • ALOV application provides mapping functionality (www.alov.org) • ALOV is a “free, portable Java applet” that features zooming and panning upon a map • ALOV utilizes ESRI files which are derived from the Census Bureau’s TIGER files • ESRI files provide vector mapping and layers of data

  7. Cleaner Interface • Redesigned GUI based on user feedback • More dynamic and easily navigated by any user
