What IS Juxtaposition? • Placing two items “side by side” to EMPHASIZE the differences and contrast between them. • The contrast should MAKE a POINT. • Juxtaposition = noun • To juxtapose = verb
Isn’t That Like Irony? • Ironic situations create an EXPECTED and RESONABLE outcome to come true…but then doesn’t • Expectation ….then reveal • Juxtaposition shows TWO items next to each other. • Item…item • But…they are somewhat similar as terms!
Why Does it Matter? • Authors are always trying to make a point…THEME • This is ONE method by which they may try to do that. • NOTE…some of the examples we will show are accidental, not intentional. That MAY change some of the intentional theme teaching by the texts.
How Do I Find It? • Look for items (words, phrases, concepts) placed or described next to each other that seem at odds. • WHY would the author place these things together? • WHAT is the POINT about placing them at odds?
In Literature? • Foil characters! • Romeo and Tybalt • Voldemort and Harry Potter • Hamlet • Hamlet addresses Yorick’s skull and talks about LIFE and DEATH
In Speeches • Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. • MLK, Jr. • An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind. • Gandhi
