Take out a piece of paper • Draw a big box on it • Draw a horizontal line across the middle of the box • Put a Label Above the Box Titled “Nouns” • Label the top half, “Things I Know” • Label the bottom half, “Things I Learned” • Fill out the top ½ of the box Start by Doing the Following Things:
Definition of a Noun? person, place, thing, or idea
There are six different types of nouns! Noooo!!! • Compound • Common • Proper • Concrete • Abstract Don’t worry, they’re easy! • Collective
Let’s Start with… Common & Proper Nouns. What is the difference, kids?
That’s right! A common noun names anything that is not specific. Therefore, it does not have a capital letter. And a proper noun is something specific, so it does require a capital letter!
EXAMPLES • EXAMPLES OF COMMON: • cell phone • compassion • squirrel • movie • flag • EXAMPLES OF PROPER: • Grand Canyon • Beethoven • Sperry’s • Timn • Pacific Ocean
Now let’s discuss concrete & abstract nouns! What are they?
Examples: • popcorn • tree • student • football Concrete Noun: Can be perceived by one or more of the senses • Examples: • love • humor • pride • confidence Abstract Noun: An idea, feeling, quality, or characteristic

Next is Compound Nouns. This is really too easy… Definition? A noun made up of 2 or more words put together as a single noun Examples?

Collective Nouns Def: A word that names a group “What is a collective noun?” • audience • family • team • committee • flock Examples?
Collective Nouns “Is cats a collective noun?” Why or why not? “What’s the difference b/t a collective noun & a plural noun?”
Identify the nouns in each sentence and classify as: common or proper, concrete or abstract, & if it’s collective Now let’s see if you know what you’re talking about… Each day huge crowds visit the Lincoln Memorial, which is in Washington, D.C. The memorial is in a beautiful setting not far from two other presidential monuments and the capitol.
