2. What is an adjective? • A word that describes a noun. • Ej: pretty, tall, intelligent • Ej: bonito, alto, inteligente

3. Placement…. • In English, the adjective almost always comes before the noun. before the noun the seriousstudents

4. Placement…. • In Spanish, the adjective usually comes AFTER the noun. afterthe noun los estudiantesserios

5. Concordancia…. • In Spanish, adjectives must match their noun in TWO ways: • Gender • Number

6. Concordancia…. 1.Matching in GENDER: Ask yourself… Is the noun masculine or feminine?

7. ¡Recuerde! • Generally a noun is feminine if it ends in an –a • Ej: la chica • Generally a noun is masculine if it ends in an –o • Ej: el libro

8. Concordancia…. To match the adjective to its noun, you may have to… change the ending of the adjective.

10. EXCEPTIONS!!!! • Adjectives that end in ‘–e’ match both genders. • Ex: inteligente • grande

11. EXCEPTIONS!!! • Many adjectives that end in a consonant match both genders. • Ex: joven

12. EXCEPTIONS!! • There are some words that are exceptions to these rules. These have to be memorized! • Ex: trabajador trabajadora  ***This is the only adjective like this to remember in Spanish I.***

13. Concordancia…. • In Spanish, adjectives must match their noun in TWO ways: • Gender • Number

14. Concordancia… • To match an adjective to its noun in number, ask yourself: Is the noun singular or plural?

15. Concordancia… To make an adjective plural: • Add an –s if the adjective ends in a vowel. • Add an –es if the adjective ends in a consonant. • Ej: las chicas altas los chicos trabajadores
