  2. Function of the Male Reproductive System • To make sperm: the male sex cell • To fertilize the egg cell: the female sex cell

  3. Testes • Make sperm 50,000 per minute • Produce testosterone: main sex hormone of males

  4. Scrotum • Skin-covered sac that hangs from the body • Lower temperature for sperm production; 1 degree cooler than body temperature

  5. Penis • Removes urine from the body • Delivers sperm to the female vagina

  6. Penis Changes • Erection: blood vessels fill with blood • Ejaculation: sperm released from the penis after arousal • Wet Dream: also known as a nocturnal emission.

  7. Epididymis • Coiled tube where sperm mature and are stored • It takes 2-10 days to mature

  8. Vas Deferens • Tubes the sperm pass through to get fluids added (SEMEN)

  9. Prostate Cancer • Early detection is key, delaying treatment can be deadly • Primarily in older men • Not common in men under age 45

  10. Testicular Cancer • Most common in ages 15–35 • Genetic link • Pass out Self Examination handout

  11. 5 Ways to Keep Healthy • Wear appropriate protective gear “CUP” when playing sports • Avoid wearing tight clothing (sperm production) • Wash every day, and dry carefully • Perform a monthly testicular self exam • Have an annual checkup
