  2. Glass Facts 2010 National Data • 25 billion glass containers made in U.S. • 80% beverage containers / 20% food • Glass MSW %: 1990 - 5.8% / 2010 – 3.7% • Glass Recy % : 1990 – 22.1% / 2010 – 33.4% • Ten(10) states have deposit laws • Glass does not compost, pulp & is inert

  3. Ohio Glass Facts

  4. Rumpke Recycling Philosophy • Recycling should be a cost-effective alternative to waste disposal • Recycling should be comprehensive* • Recycling efforts must produce quality, end-use materials*

  5. Glass Recycling Historic Challenges • Single-stream processor • Glass makes up over 15% • SWDs want glass included • High costs / low value • Limited access to mixed color glass markets

  6. 2004 Glass Marketing Plan Components • Vertically-integrated plan for Rumpke plants • Internal generation of 40,000+ tons per year • Only produce “fine-grind” for fiberglass insulation • Minimize transportation, centrally located in Dayton, Ohio 2004 Glass Plant

  7. Rumpke Glass Plant: 2004 to 2010 Six-Year Learning Curve • Product storage critical • Needed to expand beyond fiberglass to container mkt. • New processing equipment • Additional sources of mixed glass from outside generators

  8. Rumpke Glass Plant 2011 Revised Operating Plan • Invested $3.2M in Binder+Co. company processing & optical sortation system • Entered the container glass market in addition to the fiberglass market • Expanded into rail shipments

  9. Rumpke Glass Plant Operational changes • 65% output to insulation • 35% output to containers • three(3) optical scanners • metal & ceramic detection • air separation to deal with organic matter (LOI)

  10. Rumpke Glass Plant Raw Material • Rumpke Single-Stream MRFs and Commercial plants • Solid Waste Districts via roll-off & gaylords • Third-party MRF operators • Commercial and Retail generators of container glass products (restaurants, bars)

  11. Rumpke Glass Plant Removing Contaminants • Manual sortation plays important role • Utilized at both Presort & Postsort • Postsort focus is quality control (QC) • Target unique items at Presort station

  12. Rumpke Glass Plant Repetitive Steps • Manual sortation • Screens • Air Separation • Magnetic Separation • Eddy Current • Optical Sortation (contaminants / color)

  13. Rumpke Glass Plant Clear Glass Final Postsort Station Amber Glass

  14. Rumpke Columbus MRFVertically-Integrated Feed System MRF Glass Trommel Glass Storage Silo 80 ton capacity Screened glass from MRF

  15. Ohio Glass Initiative How does Ohio generate an additional 165,000 tpy? • Increased access (new) • Targeting the large generators of glass • Incorporating glass into residential curbside program • Increased public education & awareness

  16. Rumpke Proposal February 1st, 2013 Pilot Project Proposal – SW District Five (5) Regional Zones

  17. Public Awareness Rumpke Glass Project • Providing service to 59 Cincinnati bars/restaurants • Identifying glass drop-off locations in SW Ohio • Evaluating various collection methods • Moving forward …
