Creates order by organizing its members into small “social classes” to meet basic needs • Social Classes – rank people in order of status, depending on what is important to culture (money, job, education, ancestry, etc.) Social Organization
The Family is the most influential social group in anyone’s life. • There are two different types of families: • Nuclear Family – Father, mother, and their children • Extended Family – Cousin, Nephew, Aunt, Uncle, Grandmother, etc. The Family
Rules and Behavior - Norms • Enforced ideas of right and wrong • Often these ideas are part of culture’s written laws Customs and Traditions
All cultures have a spoken language even if there are no developed forms of writing • Many societies include a large number of people who speak different languages • Each language can have several different dialects • American – Color • British - Colour Language
Products of the human imagination • Helps us pass on the culture’s basic beliefs Arts and Literature
Answers the basic questions about the meaning of life • Supports values that groups of people feel are important • Religion is often a source of conflict between cultures • Two types of Religions: • Monotheism – Worship in one god • Polytheism – Worship in more than one god Religion
