  1. Welcome to Mrs. Miller’s Open House Presentation Math in Crazy 8’s is Crazy Great!!

  2. Needed:* Spiral “interactive” notebook* Pencils & pens* Calculator Not Allowed: * Phones * Gum Rules: * I will treat others the way I want to be treated. * My behavior will help me and those around me learn. * I will use my resources to complete my assignments on time and to the best of my ability.

  3. Tips for Success Bring a willingness to: Take notes – notes are paramount – whatever is written on the whiteboard, under the doc cam, spoken aloud, discussed – if it is mathematical, write it down. Ask questions Learn from mistakes Participate / engage in learning Take risks Have a positive attitude Be a change -agent

  4. Daily Procedures • Come in quietly, remove materials from backpack, turn in any assignments, have a seat, follow directions. • “Bell Work” = warm-up problem(s) – Conundrum • ‘Homework Checkers’: 1) check-off assignments using + (4 pts) (3 pts) -(2 pts)placed on check sheet and on assignment based on: • Name, date & period in upper right-hand corner of the paper. • All work is shown for each problem. • Answers given for all problems. 2) Follow-up with students missing work 3) Respond to inquiries regarding checks

  5. Daily Procedures - continued Assignments are immediately returned to be ‘checked and corrected’ and possibly share solutions with classmates. The day’s agenda must be flexible in order for me to respond to student learning. We are continually adding tools to our toolbox. Class time is spent collaborating on assignments, taking notes, sharing solutions, analyzing other’s work, and clarifying mathematical concepts. Please check my web site for assignments, assignment tips and resources, and upcoming events.

  6. Assignments Based on CUSD curriculum standards, objectives and mathematical practices. (Available on the CUSD web site) Reference pages, worksheets, and problems come from a variety of sources and are aligned to our curriculum. (Pearson, NCTM Illuminations, Mathematics Assessment Resource Service, Noyce Foundation to name a few) ‘Checked and Corrected’ by the student the day the assignment is due. Written on the whiteboard, Notebook ‘T of C’, posted to web page

  7. Points for Assignments Assignments are usually given points based on completion/effort (the check, check plus, check minus) Are worth half credit if turned in a day late Can be completed during ‘check and correct’ with pen and turned in the following day if not completed the day it was due May be graded for accuracy – sometimes ‘Trade and Grade’ May be collected and graded by the teacher using the ‘Given and Goal’ rubric.

  8. Points for Precision and Participation ‘Given and Goal’ Rubric Team Contributions Interactive Notebook Spot-check for participation and precision Assessments

  9. Assessments Every other week Usually 20-40 points Not based on rote memorization Related to what is covered in class Aligned with CUSD curriculum
