PDP a process of Implementation • Lorraine Farrelly • University of Portsmouth School of Architecture • Course Leader • First year co ordinator • Teach Representation and drawing
Considerations • University requirement • Professional experience • Departments resources
University of Portsmouth • www.port.ac.uk/departments/services/learningdevelopment/personaldevelopmentplanning/WhatisPDP/ • http://www.port.ac.uk/departments/studentsupport/ask/
Profession • http://www.pedr.co.uk/ • Employers • skills
Architecture • Connection to CPD • Self evaluation • Connect to idea of professional log book • Continued self evaluation between academic years
Department- Students • Raises personal issues • Reassures • Confidence issues • Help with elective choices • Career direction
Department staff • Personal introduction • Focus on individual concerns • Architecture as broad course students can experience difficulties with one area • Awareness of issues
Effective Implementation • Embed it in the architecture student learning experience. • Complement existing systems such as Review / Crit / Portfolio assessment. Make it part of existing staff student relationship:studio system.
The Studio • Students have to add to comment made by tutors in the crit, • Portfolio comments: at end of year staff write comments/ students write response. • Next academic session , a continuing process from first year through to diploma
Example • 2003 Started with first year students as self assessment element • 2004 developed to become an interview and log book after ILP ( individual learning profile) for all first years • Applied to all undergraduate years • Feedback form students/ staff Important to recognise different needs of different academic years • PDP log book : self development over architecture course

Considerations for Architecture and PDP Include students views / issues Respond to course/ subject issues Use Institutional resources Integrate a mechanism into course operation Teaching staff need to be positively consulted , they have to implement the process Allow the mechanism to be flexible
