Early Recovery and Rehabilitation Support for the Households Affected by Flood and Water logging in Bangladesh
Project Background Heavy rainfall in August 2011 combined with poor maintenance of drainage system and river protection embankment, siltation of major rivers and intrusion of water from West Bengal, India caused flooding in 13 districts in Bangladesh. Satkhira district is categorised as badly affected by flood in respect to affected households (HHs) numbers, damage and loss of houses, crops, sanitation and communication. As per the Joint Need Assessment report, in the assessed areas (41 unions of Jessore and Sathkhira district), a total of 72,284 families were affected in the sectors of food security, livelihood, water & sanitation, shelter and education. Following the JNA, Save the Children applied for the 2nd phase support for the affected families to ECHO.

RESULT - I Targeted households, through the cash for work activity have increased income for food security during the hunger period. RESULT – 2 Targeted households, through the cash for training activity have increased income for food security and built their skills and minimized asset depletion during the hunger period
Targeting of households for Cash for work- 3,770 ( 40 days-March/April/May): Families that have just returned to their homes recently but do not have sufficient income opportunity to feed their family members Families still living on road or embankment. Families living with their land inundated. Families with large number of children Pregnant / Lactating women/divorced/widow People with disabilities People with no means of income Families from ethnic and untouchable group Specific targeting of vulnerable households for Cash for Training Female members from the same 3,770 HHs who are unable to participate in the Cash for Work Selection Criteria
