Steve Ashby, PNNL, Chair of Chief Research Officers’ group • NLDC support group for 6+ years; independent of DOE; meets multiple times per year • Advocates for research & development in the country • 3 flavors of labs: NNSA, SC, and EERE – work on getting agreement/consensus • Be sure the labs are present in high profile national meetings • Learning/education about the other labs: understand common themes and diversity (Ex: 1-pagers to DOE re: WFO, LDRD) • Engage DOE: understand DOE issues with other agencies; explain why policies are onerous, etc. • Engage with other NLDC support groups and COO group • White papers from scientific point of view: future of national labs; policy issues; transforming America’s energy economy
New CRO Initiatives • Work with labs on ‘value of national labs’ brochure as companion to breakthroughs brochure (Jeff Miller) • Nature of international collaborations: large research efforts; formal relationships; economic impact; are we giving away IP? • White papers for next national political transition • Workshops hosted by Sec. Chu: lab directors charged CROs to implement; develop a sustainable series (Austin, TX: supercomputing/exascale) • OMB education re:1. Third party financing 2. Contract competition 3. Contract costs 4. Separate labs’ salaries from feds’ • Explain budgets on the Hill
Charge from National Lab research officers • Compose a message or a series of messages based on common strengths that can be broadcast by ALL national laboratories • Propose an overarching theme or mantra • Encourage the dispersion of these ideas
Marketing the National Laboratories • Who are we? • What do we do? • Why does it matter? • Who cares and why? NL CCO committee • Jim Bono, LLNL • Marge Lynch/Pete Genzer BNL • Amy Lientz, INL • Kitta MacPherson, PPPL • Jeff Miller, LBNL • Katie Yurkewicz, FNL
The U.S. National Laboratories:Building a better life for all Americans through the power of science We provide: • Solutions for real-world challenges • Stewardship of scientific excellence • Arenas of discovery • Innovations to spark prosperity
John Gross, director of policy, Office of Nuclear Energy • Communication & transparency = goal of Obama administration • Focus increasingly on good and proper communication • NE turns to labs and asks us to talk with public as the experts • Requires media training for scientists • Message: labs = expert scientists and cool science • Stive for balance between DOE and autonomy through work for others; improves resulting science • Share information with NE, PA, etc. to craft news that works for the partners; avoids conflicts & confusion • The labs need to improve communication among the labs, NE, scientists, partnerships • Talk with site office actively & regularly • Work closely with PA/Leistikow because they work among offices
DollineHatchett • Let her know about important upcoming events • Call ahead to allow time to plan for coordination and inclusion in White House report • Evergreen material: Rousseaux uses it for blog • Chu launching science speaker/lecture series quarterly in DC • Dolline and Patrick Glynn working closely together • Tweeting encouraged • Send news of open houses, interactions with the community to allow DOE participation
Phil West: EERE • EERE worked with Disney and main ad agencies to produce campaigns • Excellent materials available to explain science • Call him & ask for his presentation
Dan Leistikow • Message from national labs = innovation and what it means for the nation’s prosperity • Economy is the big public issue • Look for stories about energy independence: biofuels, greater fuel efficiency, other energy solution • Send him advance notice of upcoming news and events
Cammie Croft & Michael Hess • Office of New Media is now Office of Digital Strategy and Communications • Breakthrough videos: in progress • Topic page on energy.gov housing all videos; videos featured on homepage in rotation • Hero section: researcher interviews conducted by Michael • Approach sections as articles that appear anywhere on energy.gov • Adding social media to complement/amplify • YouTube Breakthrough play list • Tweet-ups • Facebook Timeline
Immediate video needs • Input on putting together the Q&A for the videos • Scheduling time with researchers at the lab for interviews • Tweet-ups: suggest people who can handle answering questions in 140 characters and have enough knowledge to answer questions without approvals • Any other related topics we want to cover in conjunction with the videos • Submit additional videos every few months (1-1/2 to 2 minute range)
Discussion notes • Sharing resources: • SLAC has a video explaining its light source: available for all • Las Alamos is doing a video on isotope cancer treatment • NOVA is doing a series on materials • Idaho used FB, twitter & website during plutonium uptake; now tied all into emergency communications (similar to Las Alamos experience?) • Berkeley is rebranding itself • Argonne launched redesigned website and search engine • Use Facebook Timeline to tell your lab’s story • Images pinnable in Pinterest
