Invasive species: a species that has moved into an area and reproduced so aggressively that it has replaced some of the original species. Exotic species: a species that did not originally occur in the areas in which it is now found, but that arrived as a direct or indirect result of human activity.
Invasive species threaten individual species and reduce overall species abundance and diversity. Biological diversity - biodiversity:A lot of different organisms (species) in one area.
Didemnum • Didemnum is a tunicate. • These are usually called "Sea Squirts" which are Urochordates, they have two siphons in the top, and an outer covering called a tunic. The tunicate of Didemnum has a pH of 2, so they are not prey for many organisms. They are small, and live in colonies. They are complex organisms on the inside, and are more closely related to humans than any other marine invertebrate. • http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2005-03/rs/index.php
Tunicates • Invasive Tunicates, can come from other parts of the world to local waters and have no natural predators. They can reproduce quickly and can crowd out or kill populations of local native marine species. There is a growing concern that northeastern shellfish industry may be affected. • Didemnum can reproduce sexually or by fragmentation.
Tunicates Cont… • Ballast water from ships is sometimes discharged into Long Island Sound and may contain harmful species from other areas of the world. It’s possible that the Invasive Tunicates arrived this way.

Didemnum • “Dr. Robert B. Whitlatch and colleagues from the University of Connecticut's Department of Marine Sciences are conducting research operations aboard the R/V Connecticut to investigate the distribution and density of the sea squirt Didemnum sp. in the eastern region of the Long Island Sound” (Space Invaders Non-Native Ascidians in The Long Island sound).
Essential Questions Being Asked • What are the characteristics that make a species a successful invader? • What effects do invaders have on resident fauna and flora? • Why are some habitats apparently more vulnerable to invasion than other habitats? (Space Invaders Non-Native Ascidians in The Long Island sound). • http://www.nurc.uconn.edu/about/events/event0014/index.htm
Our Essential Question • What factors cause invasive species to have a greater impact on ecosystems?
