  3. 12 out of the 13 major mines in the area are controlled by armed forces. • population in the region are treated like slaves • The average wage for a miner is only $1 – $5 a day. 10-16 year old Children, being slaved in their own homes, and are missing on valuable years of education

  4. Most of the outcome and profit is controlled by armed groups, and is used to fuel war in the area. The profit is used to fuel war and terror in the Region.

  5. Minerals are sold to trading houses, which operate illegally due to a high registration fee of $500. • Trading houses then sell the minerals to large companies that process them and sell them to foreign buyers.

  6. A blessing or a curse The electronic industry is the single largest consumer of the minerals from eastern Congo To enable Congo’s minerals to benefit its people rather than fuel war

  7. A better future • Companies must trace back the precise source of the mineral, to know where it came from • companies should conduct detailed examinations of all the mineral supply chains. • A certification scheme should be required to enable consumers to purchase conflict free electronics.
