Underlay The most visible portion, shingles act as the primary defense against wind, rain, and the elements. Edge Treatment Provides extra protection around all edges of the roof to protect against wind-driven rain. Valley Treatment Typically made of vinyl or metal, the edge treatment allows for more efficient water shedding. Flashing Protects against snow and ice build-up damage, which is more prevalent in valleys on roofs.
