  1. Welcome to the Open Study Series of the South Livingston church of ChristSubject for tonight:Divorce & Remarriage Lesson 4 Conclusion: False Doctrines Examined & Answered

  2. Review of Passages & Principles

  3. God’s Will Summarized • One Man • One Woman • Become One Flesh • Marriage Bound By God For Life • Divorce & Remarriage Is Not God’s Desire - Rule Opposes It

  4. All Divorce & Remarriage Is Governed by Law • Man could not remarry wife after putting away (Deut. 24:1-4) • Woman could not remarry husband after put away (Deut. 24:1-4) • Man could not put away wife if he falsely accused (Deut. 22:13-19) • Man must marry & could not put away one raped (Deut. 22:28-29) • Priest could not marry one put away (Lev. 21:7, 13-14) • No unlawful marriage to continue (Ezra 10:1-4)

  5. Matthew 5:31-32 31 It was said also, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement: 32 but I say unto you, that every one that putteth away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, maketh her an adulteress: and whosoever shall marry her when she is put away committeth adultery.

  6. Matthew 5:32 Gives No Right to Remarry • Notes culpability of one putting away spouse without right cause • Exception states justifiable cause for putting away - fornication • In either case, the one put away commits adultery in new marriage • Passage neither states nor implies any right of remarriage

  7. Matthew 19:3-6 3And there came unto him Pharisees, trying him, and saying, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? 4 And he answered and said, Have ye not read, that he who made them from the beginning made them male and female, 5 and said, For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh? 6 So that they are no more two, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

  8. Matthew 19:7-9 7 They say unto him, Why then did Moses command to give a bill of divorcement, and to put her away? 8 He saith unto them, Moses for your hardness of heart suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it hath not been so. 9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and he that marrieth her when she is put away committeth adultery.

  9. Matthew 19:9 Gives Innocent Right to Remarry • Jesus answered Pharisees’ question about proper “cause” to put away • Jesus responded by appealing to His law in contrast to Deut. 24 • Only acceptable cause to sunder marriage is putting fornicator away • Thus, only innocent party can do so with right to marry another

  10. 1 Corinthian 7:10-11 10But unto the married I give charge, yea not I, but the Lord, That the wife depart not from her husband 11(but should she depart, let her remain unmarried, or else be reconciled to her husband); and that the husband leave not his wife.

  11. Married: Do Not Depart • Charge came from the Lord • Mark 10; Luke 16:18; Matt. 5 & 19 • “Rule” stressed without exception • Instructs both “depart not” • If depart, only two options given: • remain unmarried or be reconciled • “Unmarried,” but has “husband” • Man’s law sundered, but not God’s law

  12. Romans 7:2-3 2 For the woman that hath a husband is bound by law to the husband while he liveth; but if the husband die, she is discharged from the law of the husband. 3 So then if, while the husband liveth, she be joined to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if the husband die, she is free from the law, so that she is no adulteress, though she be joined to another man.

  13. Constraint of Law Clarified From Romans 7 • Marriage is bound by law until death, not severed at man’s desire • Why?Law gives no discharge at man’s desire & rebellious action • Only God may release constraint of law in keeping with provision of law • God set conditions & exception • Constraint of law abides until death

  14. This Week’s TopicConclusion: False Doctrines Examined & Answered What do the differing theories teach about the subject? Are there common themes in the various theories?

  15. Theories & Common Themes

  16. Guilty party may remarry Alien sinner not amenable (Kingdom law) Baptism washes away marriages Repentance & prayer take away marriages One covenant (same as Deut 24) Redefinition of adultery Believer deserted may remarry Divorce & remarry for any cause All marriages (and remarriages) accepted as holy Wide Variety of Theories

  17. Spin the Wheel - Unlawful Mate Every Time Theories Change, But Effect Is Same

  18. Contradictory Theories - Same End • Some of the theories depend on contradictory teachings • Kingdom Law vs. One Covenant • Any Cause vs. Guilty Party Remarry • Deserted Remarry vs. Repent & Pray • Redefinition of “Adultery” vs. Other Theories Retain Meaning of “Adultery” • Yet, these contradictory teachings reach same conclusion - How So?

  19. Common Themes - Important! • Must think of basic reason behind acceptance of remarriage • Only two possibilities exist: • It was always right • It was wrong, but became right at some point • Mutually exclusive; cannot be both • If both argued, admission of wrong

  20. Baptism washes away marriages Repentance & prayer take away marriages Redefinition of adultery APPEAL IS TO FORGIVENESS Must meet terms of pardon Guilty may remarry Kingdom law (alien not amenable) One covenant Believer deserted may remarry Divorce & remarry for any cause All marriage (or remarriages) accepted as holy What Is Basic Point of Theory? What Is Basis of Theory? Wrong, Became RightNever Wrong

  21. Answering False Theories • “Never Wrong” Theories • each fly in face of Matthew 19 context • each calls evil “good” & good “evil” • “Wrong Made Right” Theories • redefinition of adultery absurd (Jn. 8) • deny the requirements of repentance • justify continuing in sinful practices • mistake forgiveness&change of law • try Herod & Herodias as test case

  22. Mark 6:17-18 17 For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife; for he had married her. 18 For John said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother’s wife.

  23. What If Herod & Herodias Baptized? • Unlawful to have Herodias before • Lawful after baptized? • Pharisees & Sadducees told to repent first (Matthew 3:5-8) • What would repentance require? • Could Herod repent of “having her” while still “having her”? • Try with other sins (steal, kill, lie...)

  24. Some Final Appeals

  25. Popularity of Theories Due to Much Divorce • In many areas of this country, divorces outnumber marriages • Fifty years ago, divorce was rare • Today, life-long marriage is rare • Many enter marriage with idea of divorce if “it doesn’t work out” • Society calls for growing tolerance • Theories justifying looser divorce & remarriage aid the progress of sin

  26. Theories “Wax Worse & Worse • Most begin with case of divorced & remarried alien who seeks baptism • But it does not stop there • May move next to right of Christian to divorce & remarry in some cases • But it does not stop there either • End sought is right of all to remain in whatever marriage contracted

  27. False Theories Lead to Further Tragedy • Stated motive is forgiveness, love & kindness towards sinner • But where does it all lead? • When false theories accepted, there is an increase in cases of divorce • Devastation to lives is result • With immoral practice accepted in this area, it follows in others also

  28. Fellowship of Error & Advocate Is First Step • Since 1988, some have advocated fellowship with teachers of error • Effect has been tolerance of error • Justified by appeal to much loved & respected brother, Homer Hailey • Teachers of truth said to “attack” him • Who sorrows for souls led astray? • May God help us all see sin’s effect

  30. Luke 16:18 18 Every one that putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and he that marrieth one that is put away from a husband committeth adultery.
