  1. Photosynthesis

  2. STANDARD • Usable energy is captured from sunlight by chloroplasts, and stored through the synthesis of sugar from carbon dioxide.

  3. What is energy? • The ability to do work • Why do living things need energy? Movement Growth Repair Reproduction

  4. Autotrophs – (self-feeding)Organisms that have the ability to make their own food. They use light energy from the sun to make food

  5. Photosynthesis Photo – lightSynthesis – to put together The process of converting carbon dioxide and water into glucose using the sun’s energy.

  6. The First QuestionWhen a tree grows, where does the added mass come from?1643 – Van HelmontFrom the soil????

  7. Photosynthesis 6CO2 + 6H2O  C6H12O6 + 6O2 energy chlorophyll Carbon dioxide water glucose oxygen reactants Products

  8. Stroma Outer Membrane Thylakoid Granum Inner Membrane Chloroplast • Organelle where photosynthesis takes place.

  9. Thylakoid Membrane Thylakoid Space Granum Thylakoid

  10. Why are plants green? • They contain a light absorbing molecule called a pigment. • The main pigment is chlorophyll • Plants are green because green light is reflected by chlorophyll

  11. Plant Pigments

  12. Steps of Photosynthesis • Two main steps (reactions). 1. Light Reaction or Light Dependent Reaction • Produces energy from the sun by splitting a water molecule

  13. Occurs in the Thylakoid membranes Thylakoid Membrane

  14. When water is split • Oxygen gas is formed - O2 • Hydrogen makes energy - ATP

  15. Steps of Photosynthesis 2. Light Independent Reaction Uses energy from light reaction (ATP) and CO2to make sugar (glucose).

  16. Stroma – Dark Reaction Thylakoid – Light Reaction Granum Chloroplast • Occurs in Stroma.
