People & Places: the model Understand the relationship between the PEOPLE (Activity) and the PLACES (Facility) at a university ‘People and Places Continuum’
People & Places: audit & prioritisation develop the Places People / Activity help the People by asking… why, with what, where, when & how? Places / Facilities
Types of issues raised – ‘People’ What types of rugby are on offer? How many do you lose each season – why? Were else to your students play? Where do your players come from How are they recruited? What puts people off? People How many coaches are needed for the club to function effectively Players Do you have a Club Volunteer Coordinator? Coaches What qualifications do they/should they have Referees How many… to really function effectively? Volunteers Do you have a Club Coach Coordinator How many do you need to get by – to be ‘OK’ How many referees are needed for the club to function effectively? How do you recruit/ retain referees – do you have a Ref Dev. Coordinator What qualifications do they/should they have
How will the Partnership achieve this? • Training • Education • Partnerships • Club – Education Links • By working as a ‘Whole Community’ University Rugby Club • Working Smarter and with commitment • = A Four Year Plan Example

What is Seal of Approval? • Mini and Youth Seal of Approval introduced in 2002 • Recognises those clubs that reach, maintain and improve on the required standard of a club committed to the provision of quality rugby union experiences for young players. • Integrated with the Sport England Clubmark scheme • Whole Club Seal of Approval introduced in 2009 • Ensure that the whole club is sustainable and is planning to grow participation. • 3/4 year Development Plan produced by the club, ratified by the RDO and signed off by the Regional Rugby Development Manager. • Clubs produce Evidence File to show that their programme meets the required criteria. • Annual Health Check • 3 year full re-accreditation

What the clubs say….. • "Seal of Approval has enabled us to gain funding from a variety of sources to support the club’s development, enabled us to negotiate a move for the whole club to fantastic new facilities. It is also a great tool for promotion and attracting sponsorship etc which we have done successfully.“ • “Lots of the things required are already in place…it is just a case of getting it down in black and white.” • "We are able to use Seal of Approval in our marketing communications and to promote a healthy and sporting lifestyle to local schoolchildren and their families. We promote a volunteer culture and the standards help us to provide leadership, guidance and policy so those volunteers are encouraged to adopt best practice in coaching, player welfare and development."
Question:What should be different in Seal of Approval for University Rugby?
