Scaffolding in Education is the use of specialized supports to facilitate learning new skills. Supports are gradually withdrawn as student develops independent competence.
Scaffolding might be used when teaching English to: • Bridge a gap between a known skill and a new one • to present information in a new format such as on-line or video • to teach children to write in a new genre • To help direct group discussion on a new topic and aid in problem solving
Examples of Scaffolding Include: • Asking leading questions • Providing models of the skill in use • Collaborative projects • Group Projects • Constructive criticism • Peer discussion • Teacher feedback • Offering hints that will allow students to draw appropriate conclusions
