Do Now On a piece of paper, reflect on this statement by W. H. Auden. Explain how it applies to Reader Response Criticism. “What a poem means is the outcome of a dialogue between the words on the page and the person who happens to be reading it; that is to say, its meaning varies from person to person.”

Read and Annotate • Grab a SB book and tear out 1.5 (p. 15-18) • In groups of 3, read and annotate all of the poems: • in just- • The Last Word • Mushrooms • When you are done reading and annotating, each group member must take 1 poem and write and interpretive response to it(make sure all three are interpreted). Your response should be 2-3 sentences.
Discuss • In your groups, read your response to each poem out loud. • Talk about your responses to your classmates interpretations, and discuss if you would have interpreted the poem differently than them. • Each group must come to a consensus about the meaning behind each poem and prepare to share to the class • Take notes during your discussion, on your SB pages, so you have a reminder to use during the class debrief!
Share! Groups will share their opinions on the three poems.
Exit Slip • After hearing your classmates’ interpretations of the three poems, choose one to interpret with symbols. • Draw your interpretation of the poem of your choice. • Stick figures are fine! • Be creative! • Write a small statement that shows your reasoning behind the drawing(1-3 sentences). • Staple your notebook paper with your Do Now and your Exit Slip on it to the back of SB 1.5 and turn it in.
