The political vision ‘Digitisation and online accessibility of cultural material are essential to highlight cultural and scientific heritage, to inspire the creation of new content and to encourage new online services to emerge. Overview of Europeana • A portal that integrates the digitised holdings of Europe’s libraries, archives, museums and audiovisual collections • Prototype launched in November 2008 with 2 million items • Currently gives access to 20 million items • 1,500 content providers • Interface in 29 languages • Funded mainly by the European Commission
