Forming Questions There are 4 ways to ask a question: • Intonation • Est-ceque • Tag question • Inversion
1. Intonation Informal Use the same wording as a statement, but with rising intonation in your voice. When writing, use a question mark at the end. Ex. Voushabitez à Paris. Voushabitez à Paris? Tuaimes le cours de français?
2. Est-ceque/Est-cequ’ Somewhat formal -Est-ceque je peuxaller aux toilettes? -Est-cequ’il y a des devoirs? Place est-ceque in front of a statement to transform it to a question Ex. Tumangesune pizza. Est-cequetumangesune pizza?
3. Add a tag questionn’est-ce pas / d’accord Add one of these phrases at the end to make a statement a question. Ex. On commence à 2 heures, d’accord? Ex. Nous mangeons à midi, n’est-ce pas? Ok? Right? Don’t we?
4. Inversion -Comment vas-tu? -Comment allez-vous? -Comment vousappelez-vous? -Comment t’appelles-tu?
4. Inversion Flip the order of the subject pronoun and the verb, then add a hyphen…. Ex. Nous mangeons = Mangeons-nous? We are eating = Are we eating? Parlez-vousfrançais? Est-elleétudiante?
4. Inversion IF you are using the IL/ELLE/ON form for “ER” verbs, then between the verb and subject pronoun, you must add a “t.” Ex. Mange-t-elle la pizza? Parle-t-il au téléphone?
4. Inversion NAMES: If the subject is a noun rather than a pronoun, invert the pronoun and the verb, and place the noun before them. Ex. Anna … Mange-Anna la pizza? Anna, mange-t-elle la pizza?
4. Inversion Luc et Marc, voyagent-ils à Paris? Moi et Sarah, travaillons-nous à Londres?
4. Inversion Il y a - There is/are Inverted: Y a-t-il Is there/Are there?
4. Inversion C’est – It is Inverted: Est-ceIs it…?
4. Inversion Use the question in your answer: Ex. Y a-t-ildes chats dans la classe? Non, iln’ya pas de chats. Ex. Est-ce le prof d’anglais? Oui, c’est le prof.
