e-EVN update Arpad Szomoru, JIVE
Topics • Some recent firsts • Technical developments • New science • Yet to come
Firsts in this period • e-fringes to Yebes, Urumqi, Kashima, Westford, Hobart • 1024 Mbps observations with Ef, Wb, Tr, On, Jb • e-fringes on mark5B (at correlator) • 33-hour (near) continuous observation • Merlincast, inclusion of multiple Merlin telescopes through multicast
Beyond 1 Gbps • Wb, Ef, On, Tr • via 10G, bonding • Synergy w. eLOFAR • and now Jb • bonding on 2 international lightpaths • with Cm and Kn added in elliptical robin mode
Real-time monitoring, adaptive scheduling • Real-time monitoring of station status • Fast diagnostics, essential for “non-expert” e-operations • Readily expandable to display any logged information • Adaptive scheduling: has been demonstrated to work • But technique remains in limbo
Mark5B and e-VLBI • Locally developed jive5A control code used for Mk5A e-VLBI operations and for Mk5B e-transfers (on the Dimino side) • B-data played back on A+ units at correlator (both e- and non-e) • Haystack-developed Domino code adapted for use with EVN correlator • Buffering needed in Mk5A • First fringes between A and B (with playback on B) on May 13 • Mk5B I/O board unfortunately expects perfect data, completely stops in case of missing/corrupted headers • Workaround in place, being tested

e-VLBI at high redshift • Using e-VLBI to pre-select high-redshift sources • Few hours sufficient for detection Z = 4.61 Z = 5.3 Images from pypelined data: the e-EVN is a powerful, fast-response detection instrument
(near) future • First JVN-EVN observations at 6.7 GHz, hopefully followed by an e-demo with Yamaguchi • More demand for EVN-Kashima baselines? • First test observations with KVN planned, telescopes will be connected at 10 Gbps this fall • 4 Gbps tests planned
