Characterization in The Secret Life of Bees In the Book, The Secret Life of Bees, August Boatwright is the character I can relate to the most through the story. Throughout the book August is always putting her two sisters, May and Junes needs ahead of her own, which being the oldest sibling I know first hand. After lily’s comment on the pink house August laughs and responds “That was May’s doing. She was with me the day I went to the paint store to pick out the color. I had a nice tan color in mind, but May latched on to this sample called Caribbean Pink. She said it made her feel like dancing Spanish Flamenco. I thought “Well, this is the tackiest color I’ve ever seen, and we’ll have half the town talking about us, but if it can lift May’s heart like that, I guess she ought to live inside it.’ ”(149-150) I feel I also am a very perceiving person, just like August. When lily and Rosaleen arrive at the Boatwright house and lie to August saying that they are going to Richmond to look for lily’s mother, “‘I see,’ said august. And the thing was she did, she saw right through it.”(92)
