Mental Disorders • A. Disorder – A disturbance in the normal function of a part of the body. 1. There are 230 types of mental disorders. 2. 1 in 5 children and adolescents may suffer from a mental disorder.
II. ANXIETY DISORDERS • A DISORDER IN WHICH INTENSE ANXIETY OR FEAR KEEPS A PERSON FROM FUNCTIONING NORMALLY.
AN EXAGERATED FEAR OF A SPECIFIC SITUATION OR OBJECT. A. PHOBIA
B. PANIC ATTACK • INTENSE REAL FEAR • 1. RAPID BREATHING, SWEATING, FAST HEART RATE, AND NAUSEA
C. Obsessive-compulsive disorders • compulsions are urgent, repeated behaviors • rechecking something or doing something over and over
D. POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER • PEOPLE WHO SURVIVE A LIFE THREATENING EVENT
E. GENERAL ANXIETY DISORDER • People who tend to worry about everything.
III. PERSONALITY DISORDER • A psychological condition that affects a person’s abilities to interact normally with others.
A. Passive-aggressive personality disorder – These people don’t like to be told what to do. • 1. If told to do something, they may act passively by not participating or aggressively by yelling at the person in charge.
B. Borderline personality disorder – They have trouble in close relationships with other people.
IV. MOOD DISORDER • When people undergo changes in mood that seem inappropriate or extreme.
A. Bipolar disorder • 1. Dramatic mood swings for no apparent reason • 2. Increased energy during the up swing. Depression during low swing.
People lose interest in life and can no longer find enjoyment in anything. 1. 20% of teens suffer from depression. B. Major Depression
C. SCHIZOPHRENIA • People lose contact with reality. • 1. They imagine things happening to them that aren’t real.
A. ANOREXIA NERVOSA • IRRATIONAL FEAR OF BECOMING OVERWEIGHT • STARVATION

1. SYMPTOMS – DEHYDRATION KIDNEY DAMAGE, ACID IRRITATES THROAT AND ERODES THE ENAMEL OFF THE TEETH.
C. BINGE EATING • UNCONTROLLABLE URGE TO EAT LARGE AMOUNTS OF FOOD. • 1. SYMPTOMS – OVERWEIGHT.
A. Teenage suicide • 4th leading cause of death among 10-14 year olds • feeling that there is no way to cope
3. Self-injury • Burning or cutting to express emotions.

A. Therapy • An approach that teaches you different ways of thinking or behaving. • 1. Therapy gets to the root of your emotional and mental problems and helps you work to find a solution.
B. Individual therapy – The individual and therapist meet alone for sessions.
C. GROUP THERAPY • MEETING WITH A GROUP WITH SIMILAR PROBLEMS.
D. Family Therapy • MEETING WITH FAMILY MEMBERS WHO SHARE THEIR PROBLEMS.
E. DRUG THERAPY • USE OF DRUGS TO REDUCE A MENTAL DISORDER
VIII. MENTAL HEALTH PROVIDERS • A. PSYCHOLOGIST – Mental health professional who is trained and licensed by the state to perform therapy.
B. CLINICAL SOCIAL WORKER • LICENSED, CERTIFIED MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONAL WITH A MASTER’S DEGREE IN SOCIAL WORK.
C. PSYCHIATRIST • MEDICAL DOCTOR WITH A SPECIALTY IN THE TREAMENT OF MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS.
