History of IYSECC • Organized independently by Chinese college students after the Copenhagen negotiations • First held in July of 2009 at Tsinghua University • Hosted this year by: -The Tsinghua Student Green Association: founded in 1995 to raise public environmental awareness - Creative Decision Making or “CDM Club, 6E Plus”: Based at Peking University, researches creative, practical ways to solve environmental issues -Chinese Youth Climate Action Network (CYCAN): formed in 2007, is now the largest Chinese youth climate organization
What is IYSECC? • IYSECC is an international meeting for youth to gather and share information and ideas on several environmental problems like renewable energy, low-carbon economy, and sustainability. • The summit will have a range of interactive activities, exhibitions, and games along with guest speakers to promote the “Green Future, Youth Action” (IYSECC’s motto) • It will be held on July 12th-14th at the Shanghai Expo in China. • The summit was created specifically targeting youth to change their outlooks on life, since they are the future leaders of the world.
2010 IYSECC’s Focus • Development of clean energy • Progress of international climate negotiations • Opportunities from low-carbon technology
Xiaoyi Sheri Liao • President and founder of the “Global Village of Beijing” an environmental NGO formed in 1996 • Produced “Time for Environment”, “Global Environmental View”, and several other environmental tv programs • Advocated the “Geen Life” for many years and succeeded in raising public environmental awareness in China • Numerous awards including: Sophie Prize, Banksias Award, Ten Most Outstanding Women in China by Chinese Women Magazine, Green Person of the Year, Most Influential Charity Project Award etc.
China’s Environmental NGO’s • NGO: Non-Government Organization • First NGO formed on March 31, 1992 by Liang Congjie, called Friends of Nature (FON) • Three most prominent NGOs: FON, Global Village of Beijing, and Green Home • As of 2001 there are over 2,000 environmental NGOs in China • Problems: funding, finding sponsoring departments, staying out of government influence
