  2. Words Worth Knowing: • Conqueror: a person who takes control of a place or people by use of military force • Conquistador: a conqueror, especially one of the Spanish conquerors of Mexico and Peru in the 16th century

  3. It all began with Columbus… • European explorers were motivated by 3 things: • Gold • Glory • God • So Columbus began a “New World” conquest that continued with other Spanish Explorers after the same 3 things…

  4. Famous Spanish Explorers • Ponce de Leon • 1474 – 1521 • Stories of a fountain of youth led him to sail north from Puerto Rico • He found a land he called FLORIDA

  5. Famous Spanish Explorers • Hernando DeSoto • 1496 - 1542 • He led an expedition through the American Southeast in search of gold • He became the first European to see the Mississippi River

  6. Famous Spanish Explorers • Francisco Pizarro • 1471 – 1541 • His forces conquered the Inca empire ruled by Atahualpa in what is now Peru and founded the city of Lima

  7. Famous Spanish Explorers • Hernando Cortes • 1485 - 1547 • He led an expedition from Cuba to Mexico that ended with the conquest of Moctezuma and the Aztec

  8. 3 things led to the Spanish conquest of the Americas and rule over the Native American peoples… • GUNS– having these weapons gave an advantage in conflicts and also scared many of them into believing that the Spanish were actually “gods” • GERMS – the arrival of new viruses wiped out a large number of natives (small pox) • STEEL – swords and other steel weapons aided in conflicts (also – body armor)
