Housing/Shelter in the Southwest… • Use brick of adobe (sun-baked clay). • Built thick-walled houses to protect from the summer heat and winter cold. • Villages looked like apartment houses that could reach up to 4 stories high.
Northwest Coast food supply… • Gathered clams, shellfish and seaweed from shallow waters. • Hunted seals, sea lions, whales and halibut. • Some forests may have provided deer, moose, bear and elk.
Importance of the Buffalo in the Great Plains… • Was the main food for the plains people. • Hides were turned into shields, waterproof containers, warm robes, and bedding. • Used for weapons (bones-knives, spears and hair-bow strings) • Bones also used for eating (bowls and spoons)
Surviving in any region… • Native Americans had to ADAPT in any region in which they resided. • Some also had seasonal adaptations, food gathering adaptations, storms, travel and terrain, etc.
Migration to North America… • Native from Siberia/Asia migrated across the Beringia land bridge between 10,000-20,000 years ago. • They were thought to be following animal herds for hunting.
Regional Terrain… • Northwest Coast-Ocean coastline, thick forests, rugged mountains • California- Ocean coastline, valley’s, deserts, Sierra Nevada Mountain Range • Great Basin-Low area between Sierra Nevada and Rocky mountain ranges. Mostly desert. • Plateau-Mountain ranges and Fraser River. Dense forest and some grasslands. • Southwest-Colorado and Rio Grande rivers, canyons, deserts, mountains • Great Plains- Treeless grasslands • Eastern Woodlands-Forests, lakes, rivers, fertile soils for cropping • Southeast-Coastal plains, river valleys, mountains and swamps.
Define… • Environment-Physical surroundings in a place • Natural Resources- Useful materials found in nature • Migrate- To move from one place and establish a home in a new place • Replenish- to fill, or build up again. • Adapt- Change so that you can fit into your surroundings. • Cultural Region- Area in which a group of people share similar culture and language

Regional Climate… • Northwest Coast- Winters are cold, but not icy. Summers are cool • California- Winter rains. Summers are hot an dry • Great Basin- Very cold in winter, very hot in the summer. • Plateau- Long, cold winters, gentle summers • Southwest-Hot and dry • Great Plains- Cold winters, hot summers • Eastern Woodlands-Snowy winters, rainy summers • Southeast- Humid summers, mild winters
